“Trails have multiple values and their benefits reach far beyond recreation. Trails can enrich the quality of life for individuals, make communities more livable, and protect, nurture and showcase America's grandeur by traversing areas of natural beauty, distinctive geography, historic significance, and ecological diversity. Trails are important for the nation's health, economy, resource protection and education.”

American Trails, Trails for All Americans report, 1990

Horizon Hoppers is a ground-breaking company offering a full range of trail-related services. Our expertise can help you create or improve upon your current trail system. Our specialty is multi-use trails with a natural surface trail tread. We can however provide the skills needed to complete your project, no matter what the intended use or specifications.

Our services range from the early planning processes including trail master plans and feasibility surveys, to the design/layout phase, to the construction of trails. You determine our involvement: maybe it is just one phase of the process or if you prefer we can provide you with a "turnkey" trail project. We also offer a variety of other trail solutions.

Our work includes projects on both public and private trails with funding coming in from a variety of sources including private developers, government agencies and non-profit support/advocacy groups. Several grants are currently available for outdoor recreation throughout the region.

History

Mike Hammons, founder of Horizon Hoppers has been building trails since he was 7 years old… The first trails he built were short trails that always consisted of some kind of jump at the end (for his bmx bike) From there and throughout the teenage years he expanded on this trail system eventually totaling some 15+miles. Although most of this is now under new homes, the residents can still enjoy a hike to the creek, or to one of the waterfalls on theses same trails built some 20 years ago.
Despite trail building being very demanding, both physically & mentally Mike believes the end results far outweigh the hardships “Besides the obvious, on the beach with the family scenario, there is no other place I would rather be than on a trail.”

Horizon Hoppers designed and constructed Mt. Washington’s first recreational trail @ Frank Cornell Park. This 1 mile loop is suitable for hiking/biking/nature watching & is ideal to promote physical fitness and the beauties of the outdoors.

Horizon Hoppers also designed and constructed approximately 5 miles of hiking/biking trails, both single and double track along with picnic and camping areas at Sympson Lake in Bardstown.

Mike is now owner/operator of Precision Approach Aircraft Services as well as Central Kentucky Canoe & Kayak & Horizon Hoppers Adventure Services.
Mike has attended numerous courses and workshops on trail building, design & construction and would like nothing more than to help you help the world, with your next recreational trail project.
